IT Rental Advice
RAID 5 vs RAID 10 for Rental Servers
RAID level affects usable capacity, fault tolerance and performance. The correct choice depends on the number of drives, workload type, write intensity, recovery expectations and whether the environment is temporary or production-like.
RAID 5
RAID 5 uses distributed parity and can provide good usable capacity efficiency. It may suit read-heavy or capacity-focused workloads, but parity calculations and rebuild behavior should be considered for write-intensive applications.
RAID 10
RAID 10 combines mirroring and striping. It typically offers strong read/write performance and straightforward redundancy, but only about half of the raw drive capacity is usable.
Questions to answer before choosing
- Is the workload read-heavy or write-heavy?
- How much usable capacity is required?
- How important is rebuild performance?
- Is the environment temporary testing or production-like?
- What drive types and quantities are available in the selected rental server?
